From Garden to Farm: Potatoes, Chickens, and Joyful Cultivation

I am an enthusiastic gardener turned farmer who loves sharing the fruits of my labor with anyone who enjoys participating in the abundant cycles of nature. All vegetables and fruits are welcome here but one of my greatest joys is growing potatoes. They are a staple in my winter meals, they are fun to grow and come in many colorful varieties. Adding chickens to the farm was the missing link to recycle food waste and provide essential nutrients in my homegrown food.

Growing Potatoes from True Seeds

After discovering the exciting possibility of cultivating new potato varieties from true seeds, my interest in gardening deepened. Growing potatoes from true seed produces a surprise every time you dig up a new plant. The tubers vary in flavor color and texture depending on the parent plants that produced the seeds. On my farm, I experiment with different types of potatoes to see what unique varieties I can create. Sharing seeds from my garden allows others to explore this rewarding experience as well.

Chickens on the Farm

Another way to participate in the natural cycle is to include animals in the farm or garden by introducing chickens. For me, these friendly birds are more than just pets; they play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Chickens are excellent recyclers of food scraps from the kitchen and garden. They turn organic waste into the best compost imaginable. Moreover, they provide fresh eggs, which are a fantastic complement to homegrown produce.

At Eastbrook Farm, our beautiful laying hens are an essential part of our farm, adding both joy and practicality to our efforts. I hope my experiences inspire others to embrace the joys of participating in nature, whether by growing potatoes, raising chickens, or simply nurturing a love for homegrown food!
